Fall 2007 Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Awards announced: 13 Alaskan artists receive grant awards

Anchorage - Thirteen Alaskan artists, reflecting Alaska's unique creative environment, received cash grants from the Rasmuson Foundation's Individual Artist Award program.

The awardees are:

• Kevin Foster, $5,000, a blacksmith from Talkeetna.
• Lael Gordon, $3,440, a furniture maker from Seward.
• Christopher Hanson, $4,950, a jeweler from Ketchikan.
• Susan Serna, $5,000, a jeweler from Anchorage.
• Ginger Placeres, $5,000, a folk and traditional artist (Athabascan beadwork) from Fairbanks.
• Joan Kane, $5,000, a poet from Anchorage.
• Keith Liles, $4,950, also a poet from Anchorage.
• Vlad Basarab, $5,000, a performance artist in Anchorage.
• Asia Freeman, $5,000, a mixed-media artist from Homer.
• Ben Huff, $5,000, a photographer from Fairbanks.
• Bonnie Landis, $5,000, a photographer from Anchorage.
• Da-ka-xeen Mehner, $5,000, an artist exploring visual art mediums from Fairbanks.
• Sheary Suiter, $2,961, a painter from Anchorage.

The Individual Artist Awards is part of a 10-year $20 million investment by The Rasmuson Foundations, the largest charitable trust in Alaska, to increase the impact of arts in Alaska.  The awards are intended to provide artists with the resources to immerse themselves in their work and to experiment, explore, and develop their artistry more fully.  To date, the Foundation has awarded over $802,000 for 4 Distinguished Artist Awards; 25 Fellowship Awards; and 84 Project Awards. The next deadline for Individual Artist Award applications is March 1, 2008 (postmark deadline).  Artists working in visual arts, media arts, multidiscipline - new genre, or music composition may apply for an Artist Fellowship and artists working in any artistic discipline may apply for a Project Award.
