Tier 1

Grants of up to $25,000 for capital projects, technology updates, capacity building, program expansion, and creative works are supported through this program.

  • Capital projects: Eligible activities include, but are not limited to, the purchase of furnishings, equipment and appliances, vehicles, building construction/renovations/restorations, medical equipment, sports equipment, scientific equipment, musical instruments, and library collections (books and a/v) development.
  • Technology updates: Supports organizations in the development of technology strategy and implementation plans. After completion of an approved technology strategy and plan, the Foundation will consider requests from organizations to implement or upgrade basic technology infrastructure. • Capacity building: Rasmuson Foundation is piloting a new program with the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) to support leadership and organizational development, program development, collaborations and community engagement, and evaluation efforts.  Learn more and apply here.  Typically, projects funded via the ACF program will be ineligible for direct Rasmuson Foundation support. The Foundation will continue to support capacity building activities that exceed $15,000.
  • Program expansion: Projects must demonstrate broad impact and long-term benefits, and be initiated by an established organization with a strong track record and a history of accomplishment. Eligible activities include the expansion of services or start-up of innovative programs that address issues of community and statewide importance.
  • Creative works: Eligible activities include film and documentary projects, books, development of new creative work, exhibits and other cultural projects. Successful applications will demonstrate a strong Alaska-specific context, significant community impact, and a well-developed distribution plan, if applicable.

The Foundation accepts Tier 1 grant applications year-round, with review and awards handled on a rolling basis throughout the year. Organizations will be notified via email when an application has been received. If an applicant organization is successful, a formal grant agreement and grant check will be sent. You should have an answer within 90 days of submission of a complete application. The completeness of an application and the accuracy of the project budget directly impact the length of time for review.

In most cases, a previous Tier 1 grant must be closed before a new application will be considered for funding.

In all instances, applicants are encouraged to consult with Rasmuson Foundation program staff prior to submitting a Tier 1 application.
