Green Star Inc: Alaskan Responsible Electronic Recycling

Responsible ownership of technology requires nonprofits to care for the equipment both through out and at the end of its useful life. Computer hardware contains countless hazardous materials such as cadmium, lead and mercury which, if improperly disposed, create severe environmental hazards. Since its inaugural electronic recycling event in 2003, Green Star Inc, a nationally recognized waste-reduction program started in 1990 as a joint effort of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, the Alaska Center for the Environment, and many corporate supporters, has successfully diverted thousands of tons of hazardous technology waste from Alaskan landfills. The Alaskan nonprofit sector has become a major participant in responsible recycling. Responsible recycling is a standard condition of grant acceptance for Rasmuson Foundation technology awards.

TechAtlas is a free, online strategic technology planning tool developed by NPower, a national network of community-based information technology consultancies dedicated to ensuring that all nonprofits can use technology to expand the reach and impact of their work. TechAtlas helps map out a customized technology plan that includes guides to successful implementation, step by step.

Nonprofit Open Source Initiative (NOSI)

NOSI's nonprofit primer "Choosing and Using Open Source Software", published in 2007 and supported by a grant from IBM, is a balanced educational tool to benefit nonprofits in both their strategy creation and critical decision-making processes. Click here to download the primer.

NOSI is a collaboration of nonprofit technology service providers, consultants specializing in nonprofit support, and open source software developers working to facilitate greater adoption of open source software in the nonprofit/NGO sector.

TechSoup and DiscounTech

TechSoup is widely regarded as a primary nonprofit technology resource on the web for small to midsized nonprofits. Packed with information on virtually every nonprofit technology issue you could imagine.

Located at TechSoup, DiscounTech is the nonprofit source for technology donations like office applications, networking equipment, fundraising software, accounting software, and other donated computer applications. No technology grants are required, but organizations must register to use the service.

TechFoundation

The Cambridge-based TechFoundation is a public charity founded to bridge the nonprofit digital divide by providing nonprofits with access to technology, expertise, and capital.

Microsoft Open License Charity

The Microsoft Open License Charity program allows eligible nonprofit organizations to acquire multiple software licenses-rather than multiple software packages-at reduced prices. You need only purchase one complete software package and enough licenses to cover the remaining amount of computers.

US-CERT

US-CERT, a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division (NCSD) and the private sector, has been established to protect our nation's Internet infrastructure. It coordinates the defense against and response to cyber incidents and attacks across the United States. US-CERT collects available cyber security information and provides it to individuals and organizations in a timely and understandable manner. One feature of the site is the National Cyber Alert System, which provides timely information about current and emerging threats and vulnerabilities as well as advice about protecting your computer and networks. Organizations can sign up to receive current information via email.
