Alena Hope Syverson

Alena Hope Syverson of Unalaska, Alaska, is of Unangan descent, and comes by her artistry through a sense of place and a lifetime of immersion in the arts. She studied Anthropology and Art at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, afterwards returning to the Aleutians to continue her artistic development. Throughout her life, she has held many professions, working in many fields. Her artwork, likewise, continues to change and grow. Her grandmother, Unangan artist Gertrude Svarny, says that she envies Syverson for her fearless approach to art. Syverson draws on her community and the wildly changing environment of Unalaska as her inspirations, and gains her confidence from the support of her community, and especially her family of artists.
