Alex Combs (1919-2008) was born in Kentucky and received his MFA from Temple University in 1952. He came to Alaska shortly after, teaching art at various educational institutions in Anchorage. Combs did a sabbatical in Rome, Italy, and was inspired greatly by the art and culture of that area. He made his home in Halibut Cove where his studio displayed his pottery, sculpture and paintings. Combs was recognized with the 2002 Governor’s Individual Artist Award. As a teacher and mentor, he left his mark on many younger artists.
