Paula Rasmus-Dede is an Aleut artist who has been working with beads since her childhood. As an adult, Paula has rediscovered beading and uses indigenous techniques such as the peyote stitch and niedble weaving in creating contemporary jewelry and art objects. Paula strives to create lush, unusual pieces. Thousands of beads are required to complete the embellishment of a single icon, such as a shoe, spirit mask or toy. Wirework has become a signature of her designs, and is chosen to compliment the overall design. Her work has been exhibited and toured nationally and throughout Alaska in The Embellished Shoe, a juried all-Alaska art show, and in the Earth, Fire and Fiber Show. Rasmus-Dede lives in Peter’s Creek, Alaska, near Anchorage.
