Stephen Gray was born in 1958 in Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1984 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Gray’s first solo exhibitions were at the Visual Arts Center in Anchorage in 1991 and at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art in 1992. Since that time he has had solo shows at the Jamison/Thomas Gallery in Portland, Oregon, and the University of Arizona in Tucson. His work has been in more than 30 group exhibitions including New Photography in Pomona, California, and Alaska Positive at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau. Gray’s current work revolves around Billy, a semi-autobiographical character the artist uses to narrate childhood predicaments from an adult perspective. The digitally collaged imagery is an exploration of the flexible boundaries between innocence and maturity. He had a solo retrospective exhibition of his Billy Adventures series at the Alaska State Museum in 2009. Gray lives and works in Anchorage, Alaska.
