‘The place I’ve always called home’

By Patrice Gopo

Gopo is the author of “All the Colors We Will See: Reflections on Barriers, Brokenness, and Finding Our Way,” an essay collection about race, immigration, and belonging. She was a Rasmuson Foundation intern in 2006.

Several years ago, I spent time scrolling through microfiche in the library where I now live in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Nominate a Distinguished Artist

Rasmuson Foundation is calling for nominations for our 2019 Distinguished Artist. One annual $40,000 award recognizes an Alaska artist’s creative excellence and superior accomplishments

New grants for therapeutic court, historic barn and more

A therapeutic court for Mat-Su families in crisis, a new roof for a Fairbanks homeless shelter and a portable health clinic for the eroding Northwest Alaska village of Kivalina were among 16 projects recently approved by the Rasmuson Foundation Board of Directors.

Our 2018 Distinguished Artist is Alvin Amason

“I paint Alaskan animals of today,” says Alvin Amason, “I’m glad I have my heritage, but I don’t want to rely on it. Culture just doesn’t work if it is put on a shelf, in a jar, in a museum. It is a living thing. Time goes on and cultural elements change.”

Bittersweet goodbye: Good luck to our Smart guy

Rasmuson Foundation was looking for a Program Officer eight years ago. We hoped for someone with some expertise in either arts or health, two of our major interest areas.

Central casting sent us Jayson Smart. He had cred in arts AND  health.
